School Service Award (June 3, 2008)

The Foundation is honored to announce Amon Manekul as the winner of the 2008  School Service Award which was presented May 28 at the High School Student Award Ceremony.  Amon was nominated by Foster School teachers Kathleen Myers, Deborah Monaco and Angela Haney.

The School Service Award is given to a senior student who meets the following criteria:

·   Senior student who has made a significant contribution to the Mt. Lebanon School District, which need not take place in the high school building.
·   Student who is dependable and available when needed.
·   Student who is a selfless volunteer, who may not even realize his/her value to others.
·   Student whose contribution may have had a positive impact on the experience of another.
·   Student whose service to the district need not take place in the high school building.
·   Student who has good academic standing at the high school.

Amon was honored for the years of service he has given to tutoring students at Foster School.

Ms. Myers and Ms. Monaco write, "He (Amon) volunteered countless hours each week at Foster School to tutor any student who needed additional support in any academic area. He never gave up on a student, he prepared materials, inquired about their progress, asked about future curriculum lessons, and showed a genuine concern for his students. His “little buddies” looked forward to working with him and when he realized it was a special day for one of them, he would present them with a present (which he purchased with his own money) to brighten their day."
Teacher Angela Haney writes: "Whenever we have a student that needs help completing assignments, homework or just needs extra practice in an area, we have always been able to count on Amon to assist. The children that he has worked with enjoyed and looked forward to their time together.  He has been courteous, consistent and dependable! He will TRULY be missed next year!"

Keep Your Corporate Tax Dollars in Mt. Lebanon (June 4, 2007)

Thanks to a Pennsylvania state program offering tax credits to businesses, the Mt. Lebanon Foundation for Education has been able to fund numerous educational programs for students.  The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) gives tax credits to corporations that donate money to public school improvement organizations, such as MLFE.  By donating to the Foundation through the EITC program, you can direct the taxes your corporation pays to support public education in our community.

Pennsylvania companies that make a commitment to donate for one year get a 75% tax credit and those who donate for two years get a 90% tax credit. The credit can be applied to corporate net income tax, capital stock franchise tax, the bank and trust company shares tax, title insurance company shares tax, insurance premiums tax and mutual thrift institutions tax. Public corporations pay all these taxes and private companies pay some corporate net income tax.

How would you like to be able to direct the taxes your company pays so that they benefit Mt. Lebanon Schools?

Participating in the EITC program couldn't be easier.  To apply, complete a 1 page application and send it to the PA Department of Community and Economic Development on July 1. That's it.  The only catch is that your application must be submitted on July 1. Last year $22 million was available in tax credits and all were awarded on the first day.

For more information about Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program, download the application form, or contact Jackie Foor.
